CWRU | First Year

Course registration opens July 11. Learn about the process for choosing classes

Incoming first-year students will register for courses online using the Student Information System (SIS) during the July 11–14 registration period.

The Office of Undergraduate Studies will provide you with many resources to help you prepare and will provide you with support every step of the way. You don’t need to worry about any of this at the moment—registration preparation will gear up next month—but below please find a brief overview of the process so you know what’s on the horizon:

finalexamscheduleRegistration Guide
Early next month, the Office of Undergraduate Studies will release the First-Year Registration Guide via the New Student Checklist. This guide contains policy information about degree requirements, schedule development recommendations, AP/IB equivalencies, and step-by-step guides for course planning and registration.

Advice and Support
Staff from the Office of Undergraduate Studies will advise you on course selection and registration via both phone and email this summer. The Office of Undergraduate Studies is the office that supports all undergraduate advising, so you can be assured that you are receiving accurate and helpful information when reaching out to the office. Staff in undergraduate studies working directly with first-year students throughout the summer include the associate dean for first-year students, the directors of the four Residential Colleges and current undergraduates.

You can direct questions related to academics and registration to the dedicated summer registration email address or call 216.368.2928.

Understanding the Process
During the registration period, you’ll be able to freely add and drop courses as you work to create your fall semester schedule. Once the registration period closes, Undergraduate Studies staff will review every student’s schedule individually and contact you if there are any questions or concerns.

The faculty member teaching your SAGES First Seminar will serve as your initial academic adviser when you arrive this fall until you officially declare a major. You will meet with your academic adviser during New Student Orientation to review your schedule and begin the process of getting to know one another.

You will have through the second week of classes to finalize your enrollments for the fall semester should you wish to make any changes.

Online Info Sessions and Registration Support Videos
The Office of Undergraduate Studies will offer several live online information sessions and videos that will help you prepare for course registration beginning in mid-June. A complete schedule will be presented in upcoming editions of FYI.

When viewing these sessions live, you will have the opportunity to submit questions to be answered during the session. Sessions will be recorded, so you will have the opportunity to view them later and submit follow-up questions. There will also be informational videos available for viewing through the New Student Checklist featuring faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Case School of Engineering, the Weatherhead School of Management and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing that are targeted to students interested in specific groups of majors. These videos will provide helpful scheduling advice for any student interested in pursuing a major in these areas.

Deans, residential college directors and staff within the Office of Undergraduate Studies are available to consult with students throughout the summer. Should you ever have any questions about major requirements, course scheduling, credit, or anything at all related to academics, please do not hesitate to contact them at or 216.368.2928.

Undergraduate Studies staff are ready and waiting to assist you through this new and exciting venture, and help you get off to a great start to your academic career at CWRU.
